On Sept. 9, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Department of Housing and Urban Development Act, establishing HUD as a cabinet-level agency. As Secretary Julián Castro has said, "HUD’s mission is about more than bricks and mortar. Where people live shapes how they live – the jobs available to them, the health outcomes they experience, the educational opportunities their children receive, the transportation options they can access, and the overall quality-of-life they enjoy."
Before his appointment as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Castro served three terms as Mayor of San Antonio and eight years on the San Antonio City Council. He rose to national prominence when he offered the keynote address at the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
