Former Secretary of Defense Dr. Robert M. Gates served as the third annual Tom Johnson lecturer on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016. LBJ Presidential Library Director Mark Updegrove moderated the conversation.
Prior to the event, The Store at LBJ hosted Dr. Gates for a book signing of A Passion for Leadership: Lessons on Change and Reform from Fifty Years of Public Service, released Jan. 19, 2016.
About
Robert M. Gates served as Secretary of Defense under both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama. He was also an officer in the United States Air Force and worked for the CIA before being appointed director of the agency. A member of the National Security Council staff in four administrations, he served eight presidents of both political parties. He was president of Texas A&M University from 2002 to 2006, is currently chancellor of the College of William & Mary, was named president of the Boy Scouts of America in 2013, and has served on several corporate boards of directors.
The Tom Johnson Lectureship was established in 2010 in recognition of and appreciation for Mr. Johnson's 30 years of distinguished service as chairman of the LBJ Foundation Board of Trustees. Mr. Johnson served as executive assistant to President Johnson, and later, as president and then chairman of CNN. The lectures made possible by the Tom Johnson Lectureship are open to the student body of The University of Texas at Austin and the general public free of charge.
