Johnson Leaves for Washington
Debate Instructor to Be Secretary
To Congressman
Lyndon B. Johnson, former public speaking instructor at Sam Houston High School, has been selected as secretary to Richard M. Kleberg, newly elected congressman from Texas. Mr. Johnson was chosen for the position immediately after the election which filled the vacancy caused by the death of the late Representative Wurzbach.
Mr. Johnson worked his way through the San Marcos State Teachers College as secretary to President Evans of that institution.
He took charge of the public speaking classes of Sam Houston in the fall of 1930, immediately after his graduation. During his brief period of work with the Sam Houston students, he turned out the debating team which lacked but one vote of winning the state championship in the finals at Austin last May.
“Mr. Johnson proved his ability as a teacher, as a debate coach, and as an inspired leader of youth,” Principal W. J. Moyes stated Friday. “Students and faculty appreciate what he did for Sam Houston High while he was here, and expect to hear of many worthwhile accomplishments of Mr. Johnson in the field of politics which he is now entering.”
